An honest meal at Tasty Congee 正斗粥麵專家, Happy Valley

Tasty Congee & Noodle Wantun Shop is a chain with five branches in HK, with a sixth to come in Elements.  Having tried a less-than-awesome rice dish at the IFC branch, I was a bit hesitant to visit again despite some rave reviews from friends.  Thankfully I did try it again but this time for the congee.

After an invigorating run on Lugard Road at the Peak one incredibly foggy Saturday afternoon, we went to the Tasty Congee at Happy Valley to refuel.  For a Saturday at 8:15pm it was quite empty, maybe cause of the weather or the sleepy location, but it slowly filled up as the night went on.  It was decorated in a simple, classic Chinese style.

We both opted for the typical salted lean pork and preserved egg congee (下火皮蛋瘦肉粥)($46), as well as some rice noodle rolls filled with barbequed pork AKA char siu cheung fun (原蜜味叉燒腸粉)($36) and seasonal vegetables with oyster sauce (翠綠郊外蠔油菜)($32) for which we chose kai lan (芥蘭).

I rarely eat congee, being a rice person (which led to my earlier mistake at IFC Tasty Congee).  But no wonder the place is called Tasty Congee, cause it was amazing.  With a few dashes of pepper, every bite was full of flavour.  The pork was tender and the egg was melty goodness.

The fresh char siu cheung also lived up to standards, with thin, light skin and juicy char siu.

The kai lan was good, the stems had some firmness but still soft enough to bite.

Not being satisfied we (mainly I) wanted more.  So rice noodle rolls filled with twisted “cruller”/youtiao AKA ja leung (香油條腸粉(炸兩))($36) it was.  This took a bit of time and the kind wait staff explained it as being freshly made.  After tasting, I believed them.  The cruller was fresh and crisp and came with a hoisin sauce (海鮮醬) and peanut sauce mix.  I still prefer good old soy sauce on mine though.

The friendly service never faltered with tea cups never empty for long, and the staff seemed pretty happy at their job – maybe more than can be said for some of us?

The total was $216 ($108 each).  Definitely worth it for a wholesome, filling and unpretentious dinner.
